Polardistans 2017

It was our first longtrail and a really new experience- although it feels like sprint with "only" 160 km among longdistance mushers!
I hoped all the time to have an uncomplicated race as weather conditions didn't look that bad. But the weather in the mountains is mostly different (and that's why I don't like it!). During the day it was already stormy and snowing. We had strong winds from beside but also from front what meant extra hard work. Time seemed to stand still and the track endless. I wanted to give Marco a sign from time to time so that he could plan a bit because of coming to the checkpoint. But I had no signal with my mobile phone for a long time. After he hadn't heard from me for several hours and I already was at kilometer 65 my phone rang. Marco said that my GPS tracker stopped shortly after the start and that several people contacted him if everything is fine. It was- except my curses
The last 30 km into the checkpoint seemed to never come to an end and I was getting more and more tired. Finally I arrived there and decided for at least a shorter break. The vets gave their okay for all the dogs and said they look really good. I said to them they should have a closer look on Yazzman because he wasn't that fit on the last kilometers. But they couldn't find anything. But after a short while he started limping and I dropped him.
In the meantime my doubts were growing about going out to the mountains alone in the night during storm. We are not experienced enough and I admit that I'm really soft according to that!
So I was close to cancel the race after 95 km when Joakim Persson and his team parked next to me. He wasn't that convinced too for the "2nd fight". So finally we decided to go through the mountain together and then see how to go on. But he wanted to have a short break for his dogs first of course.
After around 2,5 hours break we left the checkpoint. The dogs found really fast back into their rhythm and we reached the mountain after only 7 km. This time is was misty too and the scooter crosses out of sight. Up to a certain level the dogs did really great but then their concentration got lower. So Joakim broke the trail for a while and I was really happy about the decision to go out together. The last kilometers trough the mountains we were infront again and after 2,5 hours we were back on the normal trail. Because we were a bit faster we decided to go on alone. Only 50 km to go...
The dogs found back their motivation and started to galopp again in between. Shortly before 8 am we reached the finish line- a great feeling!

I'm thanking my dogs for their great performance:
Fox and Yazzman the first stage in lead, Fox always as motivator.
Tony with his 10 years maybe thought about his retirement and was not pleased about the mountain stage.
Havana had a hard start into the snow season and I thought she won't be fit enough. But she did a great job.
Ida and Ätti- together always a dreamteam!
Garmin was a little bit unconcentrated because his best friend JLo was in heat and stayed in the trailer.
And last but not least youngster Jim that ran a fantastic season and was in lead next to Fox for the last 70 km!
You're all the best!!!
